Yahoo and OpenID

Peter points us to Yahoo and openID. While I applaud adoption of OpenID, I`m looking at the Yahoo configuration panel where I link my own self managed openid to my Yahoo account.

I don't need a 3453rd openid provider .. I have one that I manage myselve.. I just want to use it more often.

Is the stack complete now ?

It makes sense. Sun didn't have a Database in their platform stack yet.

They have an OS they should abandon, but they have the hardware and they have appservers, however for a database people needed to go shop elsewhere.
Oracle , IBM and Microsoft also have a pretty complete stack
Others still need to fill the gaps.. Interesting times..

The Hiring Squad

Daniel tells us how he recognises a good programmer.
He is sooo right about all of what he wrote, As I have been sitting at the other side of the hiring table , I have to say I too look for passion,
I don't look for degrees, or certifications, personal experiences can be much more important than corporate experiences. But they have to be experience, not looking at.

Anyway . the article is a must read for every recruiter out there..

Evolution Happens!

Back in 1998 one of the reasons my boss back then used for not doing something on a Linux box was
"We don't have enough people with the skills to support that"

Fast forward 10 years and the opposite is happening,
I had a chat with a coworker the other day and we were wondering how we ended up having a windows box from a 3rd party vendor in our platform since no one in our organization knows how to support it.

I imagine similar conversations in MySQL environments where people wonder who is going to support that one proprietary database that came a long with an oldskool vendor

Evolution and Adoption is happening, change happens !!

Autsubscribe to Simplenews

Erik from Link3 dropped me a maile pointing me to his patch that does exactly what I wanted yesterday

The patch applied perfectly to the simplenews module I already had and after some menu digging I figured out that in the Newsletter Settings part a subsection Default Subscription options enabled or disabled the feature.

Thnx Erik !

New User Autosubscribe to Simplenews

Dear ComputerMinds you seem to have had the same problem I`m encountering today, nameley wanting to have a subscribe/unsubscribe to mailinglist form upon user registration, you also seem to have solved it once. albeit for Drupal 4.7 and you were once even sharing the code with us.
Would you please consider sharing it again, or am I overlooking other alternatives to do the same ?

While I`m at it lets figure out how to change the page a first time user gets when he logs on :)

I got Interviewed

Some people obviously think I`m still interresting enough to interview

Reminds me of my first interviews over a decade ago .. I`m still being remembered by one of my famous quotes back then rougly translated to "those toddlers steal my bandwith" , when being asked about how the growing userbase of the KULeuven PC rooms in the Dekenstraat influenced my network usage :) (Think 1994 ish :))

But the acutal news is that Profoss is coming closer and closer .. and you should now Register!
So all you Drupal and MySQL folks out there.. this is your chance to learn about virtualization !

Matt Asay interviews Jim Whitehurst

Matt is interviewing RedHat's fresh CEO Jim Whitehurst

Only one answer into the interview and I already love this guy ..

Q:Tell me a little bit about yourself. What are the last three bands you listened to on your iPod?
A: I don't have an iPod (or a Zune). It won't play Ogg Vorbis files.

That's the spirit !

Recent MySQL builds in CentOSPlus

Peter notes that you indeed can find pretty recent Enterprise level MySQL rebuilds over at the CentOSPlus repository.

Good things come to those who wait :)
