I`m kinda curious how it will turn out..

IT Pro Geek meetup

Tomorrow a bunch of geeks will be meeting a the IT Pro dinner, organised by Serge, so when I took a look at the people that subscribed I realised that a large number of them are involved in some kind of technology startup.

I`m really curious to see what the other people are up to .. but it sure looks promising.

UKUUG Spring Conference 2007 , Day 2

It's already day 3 here in the UK and I`m really suffering from lack of sleep.
My room was really close to the lifts here and the hotels lifts have the annoying habbit of announcing which floor they are on and if they are closing and opening. So as of 04:00 or so I couldn't sleep anymore as I was once again waked up by a "3rd Floor", "Doors Opening" , "Doors Closing" :(

The first couple of talks were basically irrelevant to me.. I went to the VMWare in Wales talk and wondered what this talk was actually about, no lessons learned, no hints an tips.. just plain .. we're doing this.

Luckily Alasdair refreshed my knowledge on CLVM to be followed by Steve Whitehouses' talk on GFS.
Interresting to know is that the best place to look today at GFS2 is Fedora, it isn't even a feature in RHEL now and won't be till 5.1

I hate commercial talks on conferences, and that's all I have to say about the XServe talk :(
The last official talk of the conference is Simon talking about his experience in choosing a Secure filesystem, quite unsuprisingly he ended up choosing AFS :)

UKUUG Spring Conference 2007 Conference Dinner

The UKUUG Spring Conference dinner yesterday was at Old Trafford, which means we were in an empty football stadium. I`ll be short about this. Food sucked but the waitresses will be remembered.

UKUUG Spring Conference 2007 , Day 1

After Lunch , I`m skipping the Virtualisation track and taking time for Agile System Admin by Julian Simpson he's talking about using Puppet and CruiseControl to create a stable platform for propagating config. His whole idea is that he wants to test a configuration before he has puppet deploy it.

Fairly short talk with lots of Q&A afterwards..
Interresting question: what do you do with private keys that have to be in version control.

Paul Anderson is now starting his talk about System Configuration in general, with off course some focus on LCFG.
his presentation is already online at http://www.lcfg.org/

While sitting trough the LCFG talk and I was wondering how popular it actually was, found the answer here, my bet is still on Puppet :)

Shut the fuck up, go write some code, is on the T-Shirt from Chia-Liang Kao , his slides on SVK remind me of Saint Peter's slides at Fosdem, only he is going at a slower rate.

This years UKUUG conf seems smaller than last years, at least the conference rooms are lots and lots smaller, but they are filled to the max.
There are only 2 things that annoy me at this conference, the first is the the layout of the building which really sucks, in order to go from one room to another you need to make a hughe detour or wait 10 minutes for the elevator.

The second thing is that the schedule is filled with talks I want to see scheduled next to eachother only to be followed by 2 parallel talks I don't care about :(

Oh and the fact that I have to spend 5 pounds a day on Wifi connectivity.

UKUUG Spring Conference 2007 , Day 1

This morning there is only one stream, we started out by a rather uninterresting talk from Google . Google should probably place an RSS feed on their
Recent Papers Written by Googlers page, so that we can keep track of what they are publishing. I only look at their page every 12 months when James points me to it so I`m missing lots of stuf from there.

One of the more interresting questions was if there was actually already as study that compared disk failures to Solar flares .. who knows ..

I`m now trying to get some work done in the zillionth talk from Ian :)

Seems like the next session is a sponsored talk ... not sure if it worth talking about..
