F12 Dependency failure

Fresh laptop arrived, obviously the first thing to do is to install the latest fedora. then do a full yum update.

However that failed with the following failed dependency

  1. mesa-libGL-7.7-2.fc12.i686 from updates has depsolving problems
  2. --> Missing Dependency: libdrm >= 2.4.17-1 is needed by package mesa-libGL-7.7-2.fc12.i686 (updates)
  3. Error: Missing Dependency: libdrm >= 2.4.17-1 is needed by package mesa-libGL-7.7-2.fc12.i686 (updates)
  4. You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
  5. You could try running: package-cleanup --problems
  6. package-cleanup --dupes
  7. rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

Now I don't really use all the fancy compiz stuff so for now I can just solve it by running

  1. [root@stillmine ~]# yum remove mesa-libGL

Drupal6 in EPEL

Dear Drupal Community,

If any of you are interrested in getting a packaged version of Drupal 6 into Fedora's EPEL repository (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) and therefore usable in RHEL and Centos,
please comment on the Bug I filed to get it's introduction started.

Any pitfalls, benefits etc are welcome ..

thnx in advance !

Packaging Djagios

After all the politics involved in getting a package in a distro, or not it was time for a nice small and clean package of a fresh and promising open source project. Djagios was an easy choice.

I've uploade the rpm and Source RPM to repo.inuits.be and getting the SPEC file in the upstream repo was 10 minutes work.

Next step is to get it into Fedora , and EPEL :)

Packaging Drush

A couple of weeks ago I was once again manually installing Drush as there were no packages for CentOS / EPEL or whatever, apart from the needed patch to get it running on a 5.1.X RHEL php

I had found this thread on Drupal.org mentioning that a package already exists
however David had not answered the exact location yet
So I created a drush package with a with the above mentionned patch and sent it to Jon Ciesla again he gave some suprising feedback ;)

Drush itself might need to be modified in Fedora. It seems
like one of the major functions of drush is to install and update
modules. That's great for modules we don't ship as rpms, but we can't
allow drush to modify modules that we ship.

This feedback pretty much leaves me with 3 options.

The first one is the easiest one, I just forget about packaging drush for Fedora.

The second one would require me to patch Drush so that for all existing drupal modules that have been packaged for Fedora, Drush will call yum to install them. This obviously would create a lot of work maintaining this excludelist.

The third one would be to disable the download functionality for Drush in a Fedora/Rhel enviornment, Jon suggested that this would probably be the saftest path.

(Jon also suggested a fourth option, namely removing all drupal modules from fedora and add a prohibition to package them in the Packaging Guidelines, which he immediately called ridiculous.)

I once again understand the problem of the Distribution maintainer, but on the other hand if I were the upstream Drush developer I wouldn't want to see my software severely disabled in a distribution.

So what do you folks think, disable the functionality or not ?

PS. Yes I've contacted upstream , but I haven't gotten a reply yet.

Fedora 12 Release Party

I have a confession to make, I`m a Fedora user, have been since before it existed , I remember running RedHat 4.2 on my Multia and I`m pretty sur that wasn't my first RedHat install

I`m running Fedora on my laptop and corporate desktop for the simple reason that it will provide me with a preview of what CentOS might look like in the future.

So when my inbox started to show invites of a Fedora 12 release party at walking distance from my home , I replied I'd join the party afer I had put the kids to bed.

Saturday came and I realized that given the short distance to the events place it might be a good idea to get the good old RedHat bike from the garage and check it's tires. Just after I had put Margot to bed the crowd already wondered where I stayed.

I grabbed my Fedora and jumped on my bike, only to realize it's lights weren't working :( The only remaining option was to drive by car. A full 3 minutes later I was at the venue.

.Apparently nobody in the audience had seen a real Fedora before as Bert promplty stopped his presentation.

After the presentation we tried to create an OpenSpace and started introducing ourselves, we used the Fedora as a talking stick, on a regular day my Big Tux wears the Fedora, but apparently our cats had been playing with it a bit too much ... :)

More reports from Vincent, Tosh and Bert

Oh, and I`m a Debian, Ubuntu, and CentOS user too :)

Dual Battery Support

About 2.5 months ago while I was on a highspeed Belnet connection at UZA after Amber got born I ran in to some annoyancies with my fresh Fedora 11 and multiple batteries, upon replacing the CD drive with an empty battery (to be charged) while I was on AC power the machine shut down.

I filed a bug , while going trough my post holliday inbox backlog I noticed it got fixed . Thnx Richard !

This is how open source works ..

Upgrading to Fedora 10

As some of you know I run Fedora on my main Laptop, and Ubuntu on my EEE and my office Desktop. My Ubuntu installs were pretty fresh, but my fedora was long due for an upgrade. As after years of abuse (--force --nodeps) it usually is impossible to do a regular upgrade, so my best way out was a quick and fresh install on an isolated root partition. (my /home/ etc live on separate volumes)

Johan tricked me into installing a FC10 x86-64 setup which required some more work than usual, but I`m back in the same state as I was before I started the upgrade. We'll almost .. as I expect I`ll be reinstalling packages I don't daily use on a frequent basis over the next couple of weeks.

I'll dig a bit deeper in my x86_64 struggles later but first I had to tackle the problems I had with stepping my Evolution to a fresh and hopefully more stable version.

Evolution fails to recognise the fact that I have multiple calendars, or got confused.. anyway .. my calendar was empty and I had to recreate them all and import them again one by one.
Luckily the content was still available in .ics

Also Evolution partly forgot about all my email accounts , it remembered their passwords after recreating them, but not their settings.. well. that is if I managed to recreate them all :)
(If I`m not replying to a mail you sent me sinc last thursday.. I might just have forgotten about that email address ..

On to the x86_64 stuff then. Bort pointed me to the
Adobe Labs site that had a working flash plugin. The right symlink in my .mozilla/plugins and the first problem was solved.

There's 2 apps from Google that I sometimes abuse, I don't know why I still use Picasa, there must be plenty of good open source alternatives out there .. however for Google Earth I don't really have a good alternative. bot work (unlike previous Fedora/Googl Earth combinations)

The only thing that annoyed me was Google Earth and selinux , I had to run some chcon s to solve the problems.

  1. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/google-earth/libminizip.so'
  2. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/google-earth/librender.so'
  3. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/google-earth/libauth.so'
  4. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/google-earth/libevll.so'
  5. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/google-earth/lib*'
  6. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/google-earth/libnavigate.so'
  7. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/google-earth/liblayer.so'
  8. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/google-earth/libmeasure.so'
  9. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/google-earth/libbasicingest.so'
  10. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/google-earth/libgps.so'
  11. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/googleearth/libgooglesearch.so'
  12. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/googleearth/libinput_plugin.so'
  13. chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '/opt/google-earth/libflightsim.so'

A couple of more frustrations later and the SELinux config got changed. Afterall .. Life is to short for SELinux.

A must, if you used too have Livna , or FreshRPMS is RPMFusion a merger of the old repositories

Skype seemed to be a bit more difficult. I tried installing the rpm at first but I failed , then I read some tips which suggested to use yum localinstall skype*.rpm

As I`m more of an apt-get user (yes even on CentOS etc) I don't usually try installing packages that way .. but it worked like a charm. Skype started, I could connect to the servers , however a test call reveals no input sound. Maybe if I try again with a headset later.

Anyway, I`m pretty satisfied so far ...

Next step is to get that skype chat integrated in pidgin.. or hope people will realize they have to drop that proprietary tool one day..
